San Diego Hunger Coalition is working on an important bill making its way through the legislative process. The bill, AB 1321 (Rep. Ting), would create a matching program to draw down money from a federal program that provides bonus dollars if benefits from CalFresh and similar programs are spent on Californian grown fruits, vegetables or nuts at farmers markets or small retail outlets. For example, ten bucks of CalFresh benefits could then buy twenty dollar’s worth of produce at a farmers market. SDHC strongly supports this initiative not only for its benefit to the nutritional health of CalFresh beneficiaries, but also to our local farmers. We ask that our supporters stand with us in this important call to action. Letters of support from organizations and people can help make this happen.
