It’s Hunger Action Month: How will you get involved in the fight against hunger?

The San Diego Hunger Coalition is proud to collaborate with our partners -- Hunger Advocacy Network, Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, Feeding America San Diego, 2-1-1 San Diego and Jewish Family Services – on Hunger Action Month to encourage the greater San Diego community’s involved in the fight against hunger.

·         The CalFresh Challenge

The CalFresh Challenge is an anti-hunger initiative which encourages participants to live on a CalFresh (aka food stamp) budget for a week and share their experiences with their peers. The CalFresh Challenge gives participants a glimpse of what life can be like for millions of low-income Americans living on CalFresh/SNAP benefits, making food choices on a limited budget. It is an opportunity to learn how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods, and stay healthy with restricted resources. This year, the average benefit in San Diego is about $4.38 per person per day, or about $30.67 per week. The cost of coffee and fresh fruits and vegetables will never look the same again. Learn more and sign up here.  Follow @sdhungerco on Twitter and hashtag #CalFreshChallenge for updates.

·         Hunger Action Month Social Media Toolkit

The hashtag for San Diego Hunger Action Month is #HungerActionSD, and we are empowering our supporters to spread the word about hunger on social media. The Hunger Coalition and its partners have come together to create a set of social media posts for hunger relief advocates to share with their followers. We are proud to offer this toolkit to the public via the Hunger Advocacy Network website for Hunger Action Month: Click here (see “Speak Out").

·         Take a Spoontember Selfie

Feeding America San Diego is encouraging people to raise awareness on social media with Spoontember by posting a photo with a spoon on your nose and challenging your friends to do the same. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #Spoontember. More details and template here.

·         Attend an Event

Various San Diego hunger relief organizations are hosting Hunger Action Month-related events to continue the conversation and bring people together. Check out a full list of the events here, and consider attending the Hunger Coalition’s own Fete to Fight Hunger on September 30th at Draft Republic in UTC! Tickets can be purchased here.
