Feeding Minds and Bodies at the Library

March 18, 2019 Event Recap

Feeding Minds and Bodies at the Library was a workshop facilitated by the Hunger Free Kids Task Force with support from the San Diego Hunger Coalition. Libraries across the U.S are providing meals alongside their summer, after school, and weekend enrichment programming with hopes of keeping children properly nourished and engaged. This 90-minute workshop which took place on March 18th was presented twice; once available both in Central and North County San Diego. This event was intended for library staff and community members allowing them to further examine the challenges and opportunities while introducing new insights and perspectives. Serving meals at local libraries can result in increased participation in library activities while simultaneously improving a child’s level of health and academic performance.

“Libraries are usually really challenging organizations to reach out to for summer and supper meals due to all the perceived barriers. Talking about it during the workshop with other library staff does make a difference!”

-Naomi Shadwell; MS, RDN, Director of Nutrition Services Oceanside Unified School District
